“Born This Way” — Lady Gaga’s New Single

Lady Gaga’s new single “Born This Way”, from the pending album of the smae name set to drop May 23, 2011. The track has gone straight to #1 in 21 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, etc, etc. It’s also become the fastest-selling chart-topper in iTunes history. Some have criticized its similarity to Madonna’s 1986 single “Express Yourself”, and the similarities are unmistakable, though others are celebrating the tribute to the original Queen of Pop.

Opinions? I for one am excited for the full album. :)

  1. I guess I’m the only one who really doesn’t think it sounds all that similar to “Express Yourself.” I don’t particularly like either song, but I think they’re pretty different.

  2. Hmm…. They’re not identical by any means (not like Kesha’s “Tik-Tok” and Katy Perry’s “California Girls”), but I can see the connection people are making between the slower parts of “Born This Way” and a sped up version of the main melody in “Express Yourself”. Not that it’s a bad thing, modern music is highly derivative anyway. :)

This mash-up points it out pretty well:

    • Maybe listening to them separately made me more skeptical, but that video did make the closeness between the two songs pretty apparent. I guess I just didn’t hear it before, but when “Express Yourself” is sped up a little, its similarity to “Born This Way” becomes obvious.
